MADISON, WI — Terese Allen grew up near downtown Green Bay in a household of 12. “We lived near Buddha’s meat market, Emmel’s Bakery and Kaap’s Chocolate and had access to great ingredients,” says Allen. “My family was into regional traditions like chicken booyah and Friday night fish fry, but we also got creative with ethnic and international foods. We all love to cook.”
Allen is now a renowned author of 14 cookbooks, a chronicler of Wisconsin’s culinary traditions, a local foods advocate, and a former chef. She’ll be sharing her Green Bay food memories and speaking about her work at Lion’s Mouth Bookstore in Green Bay on Saturday, May 25, 12:30–2:00 p.m. She’ll also be signing her newest book, The Dane County Farmers’ Market Cookbook: Local Foods, Global Flavors.
Allen, who has a cabin on Washington Island, will also be speaking about Wisconsin’s farmers’ markets and local foods on June 18 at 4:00 p.m.at the Door County Library, Egg Harbor. The event, sponsored by the Friends of the Library, will include a book signing and sample recipes from The Dane County Farmers’ Market Cookbook.
“I wasn’t surprised when Top Chef recently recognized the DCFM as one of the best markets in the world,” says Allen. “I’ve been shopping there—and at other Wisconsin markets—for decades. The variety and quality of food in this state are just unbelievable.” The Green Bay farmers’ markets will open on Broadway on Wednesday, May 22, and Downtown on Saturday, May 25.
Allen emphasizes that one of the keys to the Dane County market’s success is that it showcases farmers from the entire state of Wisconsin. Farmers, cheesemakers and bakers from Antigo to Janesville, from Door County to Hudson bring their wares to Madison’s Capitol Square.
“The new cookbook celebrates Wisconsin’s premiere market and the community of farmers, chefs and shoppers that have built it into an influential venue. It has more than 125 recipes that feature local ingredients in international dishes—and it’s full of delicious surprises.”
The Dane County Farmers’ Market Cookbook is published by Little Creek Press in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. All profits from the sale of the cookbook benefit the Dane County Farmers’ Market.
