GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Green Bay high school held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday to show off its newly renovated baseball and softball complex.
Support for a referendum in Nov. 2022 made the updates to Southwest High School’s athletic facilities possible.
“Thank you to the community. It’s fantastic to have this here for our students,” said Principal Michael Whisler. “It’s great not just for the high school, but for the larger Southwest community, so thank you very much.”
Renovations include new synthetic turf fields, dugouts, a concession stand, restrooms and bleachers. Whisler said the synthetic turf fields help to alleviate weather-related issues.
“We’re not having to wait for rain, we’re not having to rake, we’re not having to set up the bases and what not. They can just get right on there and play. Even if it’s a little bit cold and there’s just a little bit of snow out there, you can still go out there and not worry about it, so the kids are loving it,” he said.
Other referendum projects at Southwest are renovated tennis courts, resurfacing of the stadium entrance and the addition of a surface water retention pond.
