(WTAQ-WLUK) — Sturgeon from Lake Michigan are joining their Winnebago system counterparts in beginning spring spawning.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says sturgeon have been seen below the De Pere Dam on the Fox River and the Peshtigo Dam on the Peshtigo River. In De Pere, spawning activity is expected to begin soon. In Peshtigo, spawning appeared to have begun by Monday afternoon, mostly in the area to the right of the flow from the open gate.
Spawning began over the weekend in the Wolf River at Bamboo Bend in Shiocton, the Sturgeon Trail in New London and Sturgeon Park in Shawano. Sturgeon have also been spawning at the Princeton Dam on the upper Fox River.
The DNR says sturgeon patterns can change quickly, with the fish potentially not being active in the evening at a location where they were active in the morning.
The DNR’s website has updates on sturgeon spawning and where the fish can be viewed.
