WAUPACA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new transitional lodging facility and resource center is giving a helping hand to women in need in the Waupaca community.
The Middleton House held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday to mark the completion of a $230,000 project which began last March. In addition to providing women with a safe place to stay, the Middleton House — which is a program of Foundations For Living — also offers assistance in finding permanent housing and employment.
Applications are open now and the Middleton House will officially start taking in women May 1. Up to six women can live at the residence at one time.
“This has been a huge need for women in Waupaca County. There is just nothing like this,” said Jill Amos-Polifka, a program and case manager for Foundations For Living.
We will help them with independent living skills, helping them get on their feet, get a job. And as they work through that and are ready to be living on their own, we will help them get into housing to move on in their life. Job skills, we’ll have people coming in to teach cooking classes, we have people that have offered to teach car maintenance. There’s sewing groups. We plan to bring in a lot of other programs from different churches that can help or agencies… We are trying to bridge the gap in our community.
It is called the “Middleton House” because a couple by the name of Doug and Florence Middleton donated the home to the project.
Bob Adams, executive director of Foundations For Living, said the house was in “disarray” and had to be deconstructed “down to the studs.”
“The companies that we hired put in new electrical, new insulation, new plumbing, new drywall, new flooring, new siding, all of that to make it what it is now,” Adams said.
One-quarter of the project’s funding came from grants and the rest from community donations.
“It took us about 11 months, from start to finish, to not only remodel the house in its entirety, but to have this $230,000 project completely paid for, so we are operating debt free,” Adams added.
