GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — After game six in the Jeopardy Tournament of Champions finals, Yogesh Raut was victorious against Troy Meyer and Green Bay native and St. Norbert College professor, Ben Chan.
Raut won his third game in the finals round on Tuesday night, making him this year’s Tournament of Champions victor. Chan previously had two wins and Troy had one win in the best-of-seven finals.
With Chan taking second place, he says he’s not upset about losing to Raut at all.
“It was really easy to deal with because there was nothing unusual about the loss,” said Chan. “I really lost to a better player, and to somebody I was happy to see win.”
Since the Tournament of Champions finals featured the same three players for all six games, Chan says he developed a connection with both Troy and Yogesh.
“There really was a sense of camaraderie and mutual respect,” said Chan. “We were kind of pulling for each other to do well even through we were competing with one another. I think we all got to see each other play really well, and that makes me feel good.”
Chan said that initially upon seeing The Human Body as the category for final jeopardy, he’s surprised that game six was the end in the best-of-seven series. Chan was the only contestant to answer the final question correctly on Tuesday night.
“I thought we were going to go to game seven when I saw the question. I got it relatively quickly and I thought Troy would get it too, and he was in first,” said Chan. “So it came as a bit of a surprise when it ended.”
While Chan’s run on Jeopardy is done for now, Jeopardy is now starting to feature a new type of game play; an invitational tournament featuring fan-favorite competitors.
“The executive producer and the team there are trying to think of different ways of keeping good players around; that’s how he talked about it in the past,” said Chan. “So there’s always a chance that my Jeopardy career is not over.”
Aside from buying a new blender and some fancy treats for his dog, Chan has also used his Jeopardy winnings to support local organizations focused on mental health, addiction counseling, and public park initiatives.
