GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — March is Women’s History Month. There’s no better place to learn about women’s pivotal role in our past, than your local library.
In celebration of women, the Brown County Library, selected the following five books for you to check out.
1. Cleopatra’s Daughter: from Roman Prisoner to African Queen, Jane Draycott (Nonfiction) –
The lesser-known story of Marc Antony and Queen Cleopatra VII’s daughter, Cleopatra Selence, and her rise to power after becoming a captive to Augustus Caesar. Draycott does an excellent job crafting Cleopatra Selence life with the little information known of her directly and the shaping it through the understandings and common practices customary in Roman times.
2. The League of Lady Poisoners, Lisa Perrin (Nonfiction) –
Perrin compiled The League of Lady Poisoners to explore the historical uses for poisons and the women, spanning throughout time, who used them. A perfect mixture of true crime and historical relevance.
3. Brave Hearted, Katie Hickman (Nonfiction) –
This book was a compelling compellation of stories of women’s experiences from all walks of life as they navigated the Wild West. Hickman holds no punches when depicting the brutal honesty of what frontier life was like for a number of women, going into details of the ordeals many faced.
4. In Defense of Witches, Mona Chollet (Nonfiction) –
Chollet looks into the social issues related to the witch trials and how women are still faced with obstacles in everyday life relating to social constructs. This book is a good mixture of scholarly historical writings mixed with the cultural and social implication of what the witches in old symbolize in modern society.
5. The Dark Queens: The Bloody Rivalry That Forged the Medieval World, Shelley Puhak (Nonfiction) –
The Dark Queens tells of the story of Brunhild and Fredegund who climbed to the top of the political hierarchy in the Early Middle Ages to become some of the most powerful women in Fances political court. This is a fascinating story of how their perseverance and grab for power changed Europe.
