WINNEBAGO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — After more than a decade of law enforcement service, a local K9 entered retirement Wednesday.
K9 Tim is the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office most veteran K9 deputy. He joined the force in the fall of 2013 when he was 2.5 years old. Tim has been partnered with his current handler, Deputy Kyle Schoonover, for the great majority of his K9 career.
Retiring at 13 years of age with over 10 years of law enforcement service is longer than most police K9s work. The decision to keep K9 Tim on active duty was based on his excellent health, continued drive and passion for working, and his innate ability to get the job done, while not slowing down.
K9 Tim was trained in a variety of areas, including narcotic detection, apprehension, tracking, building searches, area searches and handler protection. He was also used regularly on Winnebago County SWAT team calls.
“Today is a special, yet bittersweet day, as we honor K9 Tim as he enters retirement,” said the Sheriff’s Office, adding “he had a very successful career.”
K9 Tim will continue to reside with Deputy Schoonover and his family in retirement.
