GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — St. John’s Homeless Shelter in downtown Green Bay is seeking volunteers to work with security staff.
As shelter guests line up for the night, staff performs their safety and security measures; searching guests belongings. At the end of that line, the volunteer check-in assistant assigns them a bunk and a chore. But volunteer coordinator, Brooke Graham, says its more than that.
“They’re a touch-point that is friendly, compassionate, and builds rapport,” said Graham. “Going through a check-in line at a shelter can feel scary and there can be all kinds of emotions.”
Graham says amidst growing demand, there’s a greater need for volunteer applicants.
“If people are looking to do a regular shift a week, then I might be looking for four volunteers,” said Graham. “But if they’re looking for a more sporadic schedule I might be looking for six volunteers, so it really just depends.”
About 90 men are staying at St. John’s Homeless Shelter every night. Both men and women are able to apply for this volunteer position.
