SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Although temperatures have been mild this winter, it’s still too cold for a group of animals to venture outside at the NEW Zoo.
Nigel, Zuri and the zoo’s newest giraffe, Eddie, can be found hanging out in the new giraffe lodge this winter.
The giraffe lodge opened in July and features 3,640 square feet of indoor exercise space.
Zoo director, Carmen Murach says giraffes need to spend winters inside because their coat is too thin and they can’t regulate their body temperature.
“They also have some issues with slippery surfaces; you don’t want to see a giraffe sliding around on the ice and crashing down,” said Murach. “So they need to be indoors until things warm up and de-ice outside.”
You can still feed the giraffes during the winter; learn more here.
