GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay is building excitement for the start of a new shipping season with a fun game.
Discover Green Bay launched its annual Don’t Miss the Boat! First Ship Contest Friday.
The contest asks the public to share the date and time they believe the first ship will arrive in the Port of Green Bay this spring.
The person with the closest guess will win a prize package. This year’s prize package includes:
- A one-night stay and complimentary gift basket from St. Brendan’s Inn
- A Port of Green Bay swag bag
- A 200th Anniversary Brown County Monopoly Game
- A 2024 Great Lakes Calendar by Chuck Zentmeyer
“The opening of shipping season varies from year-to-year, sometimes by as much as 30 days,” explained Dean Haen, Director of the Port of Green Bay. “Factors that affect the shipping season include the weather, ice cover on the Great Lakes and the St. Lawrence Seaway and water conditions in other parts of the Great Lakes.”

Shipping season start dates in recent years were March 15 (2023), March 18 (2022), March 19 (2021), March 15 (2020) and April 5 (2019).
