SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Things had been looking up for the dog who was allegedly shot in the face and left for dead in Shawano County last week, but she’s suffered a setback in her recovery.
On Wednesday, the Shawano County Humane Society announced Atley had been released from Blue Pearl Animal Hospital in Appleton and was heading to a foster home. “She has a long road ahead of her but her foster mom is up to the challenge! Continued prayers for her recovery are appreciated!” the Facebook post read.
But in an update Thursday, SCHS revealed Atley had “declined overnight” and was taken back to the pet hospital to receive additional medical care.
We do not know how much all of the vet bills will be yet. She is being monitored and treated and is getting the best care possible at Blue Pearl. The love and support we have received from our community for Atley has been nothing short of incredible! Thank you for being the positive driving force behind Atley’s healing process!
Atley was discovered Friday evening near Olsen Road and County C.
“Spread the word [and] help me find the person who shot this poor girl and just left her on my road,” Allena Muth wrote on Facebook, accompanied by pictures of the dog bleeding from her snout. “You didn’t kill her just so you know, went in her nose and out her neck.”
Muth later said X-rays showed Atley suffered a broken jaw and four entry/exit wounds, indicating she had been shot at least two times, according to a veterinarian. Atley received several blood transfusions at Blue Pearl and also underwent surgery to repair her broken jaw Monday.
SCHS said medical costs are accumulating and expected to be several thousand dollars at minimum. “We are fighting with all of our resources to save her, but we need your help!” they wrote on Facebook.
Shawano County Sheriff George Lenzner says an active investigation is underway but there are no suspects at this time. He added that no one has come forward to claim the dog.
