BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County officials are once again warning residents not to fall for a scam involving payment for alleged missed jury service.
According to the Brown County Clerk of Court’s Office, residents are receiving phone calls from individuals posing as law enforcement officers, claiming the residents failed to appear for jury duty.
The scammers say that as a result, the resident must now either turn themselves in to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office for arrest or send payment for the missed service in the form of a gift card. Some residents have also been mailed false payment notices with instructions on where to send the gift card information.
“There is no situation where it would be necessary for jurors to send cash, gift cards, or Bitcoin for missing jury service. These are 100% scams, please do not fall for it,” said John A. Vander Leest with the Brown County Clerk of Courts. “Please help spread the word on this scam by sharing with your family members and friends so they don’t fall for it either.”
Jury service is one of the most important civic duties citizens have. When potential jurors are called for jury duty, they are mailed a summons and a juror handbook which provides specific instructions for them to follow. Potential jurors should not deviate from those instructions.
If you have been affected by this scam, you are encouraged to contact your local police department.
