The hiring of former Boston College Head Coach Jeff Hafley as Defensive Coordinator wasn’t the only addition to the Green Bay Packers coaching staff. Over the weekend Head Coach Matt LaFleur announced the hiring of former NFL quarterback Sean Mannion, to help with the team’s quarterbacks and passing game. A former third round pick out Oregon State by the then, St. Louis Rams, Mannion retired from the NFL earlier this month after playing nine seasons, spending time with the Rams, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks. He appeared in just 14 games, starting three, his last came against the Packers at Lambeau Field when he threw his only NFL touchdown pass in week 17 of 2021. Mannion split time on the practice squads of the Vikings and Seahawks last year. He’s expected to tutor with veteran quarterbacks coach Tom Clements who is on his second tour with the Packers. He was the position coach for both Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers before retiring after the 2020 season. At the request of Rodgers, Clements returned in 2022 and after Rodgers was traded to the Jets, played a key role in the development of first year starter Jordan Love who finished second to Dallas’ Dak Prescott in touchdown passes this season. Clements has indicated he plans to return in 2024.
Meanwhile, LaFleur has given his defensive assistants permission to seek opportunities elsewhere as Hafley considers putting his new defensive staff together. Defensive Line Coach and Run Game Coordinator Jerry Montgomery is expected to interview with New England’s new Head Coach Jerrod Mayo for a position on his staff. Montgomery finished his 9th season in Green Bay and is among three holdovers from Mike McCarthy’s staff (Ben Sirmans, Ryan Downard). He was promoted to run game coordinator before the 2022 season.
