SURING, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Suring School District reached a $400,000 settlement with six girls subjected to a search by a school administrator, according to their attorney.
The claim was settled without the need to file a lawsuit, according to attorney Jeff Scott Olson.
Six teen girls at Suring High School in Oconto County said their superintendent ordered them to strip to their underwear in January 2022. Prosecutors said the superintendent and a nurse were searching for vaping products at the time. While the administrator faced criminal charges, those were dropped because she followed the law while conducting the search.
The case has prompted the Legislature to pass a bill making it illegal to conduct searches that ask students to strip down to the underwear. It has been sent to Gov. Evers for review.
