CHILTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Police in Chilton are informing the public of a newly-reported scam in which a person claiming to be your pastor asks you for money.
According to a Facebook post Monday, individuals have been receiving texts, emails and Facebook messages from someone impersonating their pastor. Police say the person asks for money or gift cards, alleging it’s an emergency.
“Don’t give. It’s not your pastor. It’s a scam,” reads the post. “These phishing emails or text messages are attempts to extort money from individuals.”
Police are encouraging recipients to carefully check any email or message that asks for money and to verify the request by directly contacting the alleged “sender” either in-person or by phone.
“Please be cautious and be aware of these scams are happening and help spread the word among our community,” said the Chilton Police Department.
