STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Continuous issues with mail deliveries in Sturgeon Bay have elected officials demanding answers. It’s been an ongoing problem for months.
“It’s been all the types of mail,” said resident Carl Rauch. “For the last few months, mail deliveries have been two or three days a week.”
Since November, a number of Sturgeon Bay citizens like Rauch have noticed a delay in important mail reaching or leaving their homes.
“The property taxes were due end of December and it sat in my mailbox for a few days. Nobody picked it up, so I just took it over to the town hall,” said Rauch.
These issues have gotten the attention of Wisconsin Representative Joel Kitchens (R-1st District) and U.S. Congressman Mike Gallagher (R-8th District).
One complaint that stuck out to Gallagher was a military veteran who said their medication wasn’t arriving on time.
“That’s not just highly concerning, it’s completely unacceptable and it’s something that shouldn’t happen,” said Gallagher on Friday.
Gallagher said they spent months asking for a briefing from USPS regarding delivery delays.
He and Kitchens have sent a letter to the postmaster general asking for a plan to solve the issue.
“We’re prepared to keep asking in louder and more intense ways until we get a sense of how this issue is going to be fixed,” said Gallagher.
The United States Postal Service is operated by the federal government, but generally receives no tax dollars. A statement from them read:

We are flexing our resources including using overtime and bringing in additional employees from other facilities. We appreciate the patience of our customers and are proud of the efforts of postal employees as they define essential public service every day.

Both lawmakers and Rauch appreciate the hard work put in by mail carriers. They just want to see a solution.
“We rely on the postal service,” said Gallagher. “They do an incredible public service for us. It’s a noble profession. We just want to get this issue fixed.”
