GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Steps are being taken for officials to consider the repeal of an old liquor license moratorium in Green Bay.
City Council members Brian Johnson and Randy Scannell submitted a request to repeal the moratoriums. They were put in place between 1997 and 2007 to limit the number of establishments that could be awarded a liquor license on Broadway, part of Washington Street and the Olde Main Street Business District.
The goal was to combat a high concentration of bars in those areas and their impacts on public safety.
The city’s Policy and Protection Committee unanimously approved the request. It now goes to the full City Council for consideration and action.
“That’s really a Council prerogative to make those decisions,” said Chief Chris Davis of the Green Bay Police Department. “Whatever the alders decide is in the best interest of the community, and making that balance between having vibrant nightlife and the commerce that that brings us while also keeping us safe, we’ll take the direction from the Council and make it work.”
The City Council’s next meeting is Tuesday, February 6th.
