OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Complaints of damage to and thefts of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in the city of Oshkosh has prompted an investigation.
The Oshkosh Police Department said Wednesday it is currently looking into “several” reports of damaged vehicles and auto thefts targeting Hyundais and Kias.
OPD offered these tips to drivers to help protect their vehicles:
- Park vehicles in well-lit areas, near video surveillance or in locked garages
- Lock car doors
- Keep vehicle keys with you at all times
Anti-theft products can also add an extra layer of security, according to OPD.
- Steering wheel lock with brake lock
- Club steering wheel lock
- Tire lock
- GPS tracker for vehicle
- Key fob case (anti-hacking)
Owners of the affected vehicles are encouraged to contact Hyundai (800-633-5151) and/or Kia (800-333-4542) to check if their vehicle qualifies for theft deterrent software or the steering wheel lock.
Last fall, the Green Bay Police Department partnered with area dealerships to provide free anti-theft software upgrades to owners of Hyundai and Kia vehicles. GBPD said from January to November 2023, it opened investigations into the theft or attempted theft of more than 180 Hyundai and Kia vehicles — approximately 69% of all reported auto theft cases in Green Bay during that time period.
Anyone with information regarding the damage of theft of vehicles in Oshkosh is asked to contact police at (920) 236-5700. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact the Winnebago County Crime Stoppers at (920) 231-8477 or through the P3 app.
