APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — As a result of a hoarding situation in which seven dogs were found deceased mid-January, the Fox Valley Humane Association has taken in the rest of the 28 dogs found alive.
Their exact breeds are unknown, but Humane Association officials say they closely resemble a chihuahua-terrier mix.
“Luckily the dogs aren’t behaving horribly; they’re more nervous and scared about everything,” said Danielle Weninger, Animal Care Manager with the Fox Valley Humane Association. “They definitely need some medical work done, but it’s nothing too serious.”
Weninger says some of the dogs are underweight and are on a feeding plan, other dogs require dental work like teeth extractions and cleaning, one dog needs a cherry eye fixed, and the rest of the dogs are in need of grooming.
Some dogs will be ready for adoption faster than others.
“We should hopefully have some available this week, but it’ll be a slower process for some of them because they will be sent into foster homes so they can gain weight to where they’re at a safe point to get fixed,” said Weninger. “We also want to make sure they have a calm adjustment so we’re looking for houses with older children and homes that know that they’re not house trained and can be patient with them.”
It wasn’t too long ago that the Humane Association also took in over 189 cats from a different hoarding situation.
“We kind of learned from the cat hoarding situation on how we can proceed when things so sideways with trying to figure out feeding plans, how we’re cleaning their kennels, getting intake and surgeries done,” said Weninger. “So it kind of helped us in a way.”
All of those 189 cats have since been adopted.
While still caring for the influx of dogs that just came in, the Fox Valley Humane Association is looking for monetary donations, as well as donations of items such as small dog sweaters, dog food, leashes, and puppy pads. Monetary donations will typically go towards medical and dental work for the animals. Click here to donate.
It’s not yet clear if the original owner of the dogs will face any type of animal abuse or neglect charges.
