KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Recent snow storms are having an impact on some area snowmobile trails.
Several systems in Northeast Wisconsin are either open or partially open.
“Normally, the trails up north are open before we open. But this last snow storm, we had 14 or 15 inches here,” said Lonnie Fenendael, Algoma Snowriders Snowmobile Club President.
Lonnie Fenendael says snowfall allowed all of Kewaunee County to open the snowmobile trails Sunday. Dan McCosky drives one of the groomers. He says it’s early in the season, and conditions are reported to be fair.
“There’s a lot of snow out in the fields. There’s a little section where we cannot get through yet. We have that trail marked closed. But there is plenty of snow. The wind is blowing the snow back on the trails. It’s drifting in, so we’ll have a good base coming up here in the next few days,” said Dan McCosky, Snowmobile Trail Groomer.
There are more than 200 miles of snowmobile trails in Kewaunee County. The Algoma Snowriders maintains about 50 of them. Club leaders say having enough snow to ride along the Lakeshore has been challenging.
“The last couple years, we’ve opened for a week, or four days at most. And it was late February. So anytime you open in late in February, you’re not going to have a whole lot of riding. So it was kind of nice,” said Fenendael.
And as the groomers make another pass, Lonnie Fenendael says these trails are starting to take shape.
“We should have a good week of riding here. It’s a recreational sport. A lot of people enjoy riding and when the trails are nice, like they are right now, it’s a lot of fun,” he said.
Club leaders say snowmobile trail conditions can change quickly.
