SHIOCTON, WI (WTAQ) — Shiocton-Bovina is disbanding its ambulance services; and Gold Cross is taking over.
Shiocton-Bovina EMS used to have between 5-7 Advanced EMTs, but as a result of changes in the amount of training required by the state, that number has dipped to three. All EMTs are volunteers. Chief Dan Nabbefeld with the Shiocton-Bovina Fire Department says the decline in staff lead to the decision to disband.
“This was an extremely hard decision and we didn’t want to see it go, but times have changed,” said Chief Nabbefeld. “People have kids, and everything else, so they can’t commit to all those hours of classes.”
However, he says residents wont see too many differences with this shift.
“Gold Cross is automatically dispatched like we were before as an ambulance service,” said Chief Nabbefeld. “They get dispatched at the same time, and they’re basically in quarters and in their vehicle already, so they can just leave and come.”
Shiocton-Bovina first responders will still arrive to emergencies in their personal vehicles; while Gold Cross has their ambulance.
