GREEN BAY,WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – There’s renewed effort from the City of Green Bay to make upgrades along Velp Avenue, a corridor it views as “a gateway to Green Bay.”
Hansen has been giving haircuts on Velp Avenue for decades, starting back in 1968. She says the street has seen many good and bad changes over that time.
City planners believe that traffic has Velp ripe for redevelopment. Back in 2017, the city put together a vision for the street and it’s now rezoning high potential properties to hopefully make them more attractive for change.
“Right now, a lot of it is industrial type uses,” said Dena Mooney, a planner with the city. “We really want to get those industrial uses maybe more towards the back of Velp so we don’t necessarily see them as you’re driving around.”
The city’s vision includes retail uses or a grocery store at either one of the northern corners with Atkinson Drive, as you turn off Velp to get on Highway 43. The vision for three other properties being rezoned range from an auto showroom to a tap room and housing.
“More restaurants, retail, drive through, auto-oriented type uses,” said Mooney.
“I know they did a lot with the Military (Avenue) area and it would be nice for Velp to look better than what it does right now,” said Hansen.
The city says there are no major development proposals being considered at this time. However, it continues to promote the corridor and hopes the rezoning will help attract developers.
