City of Green Bay
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — Earlier this week, Green Bay Mayor Eric Genrich and the Green Bay Sustainability Commission shared a new clean energy plan for the city.
The plan outlines the city’s goal of reaching 100% clean energy and carbon neutrality by 2050.
“We’re going to look at our buildings and structures, maybe work with the school district and other organizations to make their buildings more self sufficient,” said Alder Mark Steuer, member of the Sustainability Commission.
The Clean Energy Plan states:
Over the last five years, the City has taken steps toward that goal, creating the position of Resiliency Coordinator to facilitate the implementation of climate and sustainability initiatives, installing solar PV arrays on city facilities, benchmarking the energy use of all our existing city facilities, and completing additional energy audits and efficiency upgrades at city facilities.
However, we recognize that there is still significant work to be done to accelerate action towards our goal, while positively impacting the local economy and enhancing our city’s fiscal health. To guide these efforts and set a roadmap for progress towards our goals, our City staff, Sustainability Commission, and Common Council identified the need for a citywide energy plan. Over the past year and a half, our staff, along with our consultants at Slipstream, have worked to develop a roadmap that is represented in this report: “Clean Energy Green Bay.”
Steuer noted that Green Bay residents can also contribute to a clean environment by recycling, composting, installing rain barrels to collect water, and cutting down on plastic use.
In addition to the Clean Energy Plan, the city will implement a new “Clean Energy Connector” position.
