LUXEMBURG, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s a historic day for the Luxemburg-Casco community. For the first time ever, the high school football team is playing for a state championship in Madison.
There’s plenty of state championship hardware in the trophy cases at Luxemburg-Casco High School, but none for football. That’s because the team has never made the trip to Madison, until this year.
“We’ve been to a lot of state tournaments, we’re very fortunate. We’re very successful here. Football is, it’s different. They all mean the same, but this is really exciting. I couldn’t be more happy for the community,” said Athletic Director Jenny Bandow.
It’s being called history in the making, and the community — not just locally, but county-wide — is in it to win it.
“We follow sports in this county, it’s part of our soul. So when anybody is ready to go and have the opportunity and have the fun they can do to challenge this, we’re all behind them, no matter who it is in this county,” said Margo Rouse from Algoma.
And that support is being felt on both Main Street and in the main school hallway. The 41 high schoolers on the team and more than a dozen coaches may be the ones taking to the field, but they’re not heading into the state championship game alone.
“I’m from here, like a lot of the parents, and growing up we played football, we did all the sports. But for our team to just be embraced by this whole community, to strive to do their best and really to just feel that whole sense of brotherhood that [head coach] Neil and the boys bring to everyone else. So, it wasn’t just for the team but it was for all of coming together as well,” said football mom Katie Waege.
A few local establishments in town are hosting watch parties for the game. The rest of the 2,600 people will most likely be in Madison.
The district is sending four bus loads of students, plus the band and dance team members. The Booster Club is sending buses of it’s own.
According to Head Coach Neil Seering, “Hopefully we can come back with a gold [ball], but no matter what, we’re going to fight the good fight, we’re going to finish the race, and we’re going to keep the faith and the brotherhood and that’s going to be the most important thing, win or lose”
No matter what happens in Madison, the Luxemburg-Casco community plans to welcome the team home with a parade and meet and greet at 3:00 p.m. on Friday.
