(WTAQ-WLUK) — Before hunters head out to the woods this weekend, Wisconsin Public Service suggests a cabin-check first.
Just like wearing blaze orange, WPS says a heating system inspection at a hunting cabin or shelter is essential.
Checking your heating systems can avoid a buildup of carbon monoxide, a near-undetectable gas caused by incomplete burning of fuel or improper venting.
Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning, such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, vomiting, cherry-red lips, pale skin, fluttering heartbeat and unconsciousness, can lead to severe illness or death.
To prevent a buildup of carbon monoxide, hunters should:
- Install carbon monoxide detectors inside their cabins, or check existing detectors to ensure they are working properly.
- Check heating vents, flues and chimneys, and clear away any animal nests or debris.
- Never use a portable electric generator indoors.
- Hunters should also be aware of power lines and electric cables near hunting grounds.
Wisconsin’s gun deer hunting season starts Saturday and goes through Nov. 26.
