APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Some Appleton students are helping police officers spread holiday cheer this season.
Students at St. Paul Lutheran collected snacks that will be incorporated into the Police Lights of Christmas.
Students filled the back of two police squad cars with donations of chips, apple sauce, fruit snacks and crackers Monday.
The snacks will go into 1,000 backpacks that will be given out to community members throughout the holiday season.
The backpacks will also contain things like hats, mittens, hygiene products, gift cards and other items, donated by the community.
Lt. Joe Tenor with the Calumet County Sheriff’s Office says it’s a great community service program for kids to get involved in.
“These backpacks, sometimes they may go to people that we come into that might need an extra helping hand, might be people that we know in the community that we go to their house and drop off a backpack to you know, make their day a little easier for them,” Lt. Tenor said.
Police Lights of Christmas started in 2016 with two police departments benefiting and has grown to 55 police departments in 2022.
