KIMBERLY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A longstanding salute to service tradition carried on another year at an area middle school.
J.R. Gerritts Middle School in Kimberly held its annual Veterans Day Program Friday.
Around 800 students took part in the event that honors area veterans.
Veterans and their families were invited to a program at the school’s gym, where a veteran spoke to students about their experience in the service and some students got to read their written essays of gratitude to the veterans.
Students were also encouraged to talk to the veterans one-on-one.
Principal Rob DeLain says it’s a great opportunity for students to hear veterans’ stories and experiences.
“As we have less and less veterans around us, it’s even more important that our kids understand the sacrifices that they made every day for their lives to have a better opportunity to be free here in America,” DeLain said.
The school has organized the program every year since 1981.
