GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – More than 100 Green Bay East High School students boarded buses Saturday morning to rake yards near the school.
John Reiman, a former social studies teacher at East, started this initiative back in 1993.
The students’ leaf raking project took a break during COVID, but was revived last year.
This year’s project was facilitated through the school’s AVID and National Honor Society programs.
Teachers overseeing the work say it is apparent East students care about their community.
“This is a pretty big job, this isn’t a simple volunteer opportunity,” said Karen McGrath, an AVID and ESL teacher at East. “They are doing some work and we had spots filled within a day. It was a day we had to shut it down because we didn’t have any more room on the buses.”
“This is just so much fun, like it’s a great environment,” said Lydia, a student at East. “We’re here with our friends on the weekend.”
The students raked 19 yards of veterans, disabled residents and the elderly.
