Appleton North warms up before their opening match at state.
The WIAA State Volleyball Tournament got rolling at the Resch Center in Green Bay and the Kimberly Papermaker boys are rolling into the Division 1 semifinals after a thrilling come from behind victory over Waukesha South/North Thursday afternoon. The Papermakers, seeded 4th, trailed 2 sets to 1 before getting the match even with a 29-27 victory in the 4th. Kimberly held off Waukesha 15-10 in the decisive 5th set to advance. Owen Krause led Kimberly with 16 kills while Gage Stahmann delivered 42 assists. Kimberly will take on Middleton in the semifinals Friday at 5:00 PM. Middleton moved on with a sweep of Union Grove. The other quarterfinal matches had Arrowhead sweep Kettle Moraine and Marquette took out South Milwaukee Co-Op in three sets.
The Division 1 Girls quarterfinals also took place on opening day. The Appleton North Lightning nervously gave up the first two points of the match to Franklin but cruised to a three set sweep, winning 25-16, 25-11 and 25-15. North was led by Ella Demetrician with 10 kills, Emerson Van Lannen had 25 assists and Maggie Hanke pulled out 21 digs. The Lightning will face Oconomowoc Friday night at 7:00 PM with a trip to Saturday’s title game on the line. Hamilton swept out Waunakee and Divine Savior Holy Angels gave up only 29 points total in a sweep of River Falls.
Division 2 and 3 girls semifinals are on the schedule Friday morning and afternoon. In Division 3, Howards Grove is seeking a 5th straight championship as the Tigers open with St. Mary Catholic at 11:30 AM. Xavier takes on Rice Lake in a D2 semifinal at 2:00 PM.
