MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Manitowoc firefighters are reminding residents of the importance of working smoke detectors after two pet dogs died in a house fire.
At 1:16 p.m. Tuesday, crews were called to a home at 1212 S. 17th Street for a report of a kitchen appliance on fire.
After arriving on scene within four minutes, firefighters were met with heavy smoke conditions. Crews were told all occupants safely evacuated the home with exception of two family dogs.
While crews were extinguishing the fire, other firefighters searched the three levels of the home, trying to locate the missing dogs.
Once the fire was fully extinguished, crews confirmed both dogs had died from smoke conditions.
Two occupants were evaluated on scene and taken to the hospital for further medical evaluation.
The cause of the fire is under investigation but appears to have originated in the kitchen of the first floor.
