APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – As the Green Bay Packers continue to struggle, some people are beginning to wonder whether Jordan Love has what it takes to lead the green and gold.
While certain fans are even suggesting that he be benched, not everyone is ready to jump off the Love boat quite yet.
“I didn’t like how most people didn’t give Love a chance and now that he’s had it, it’s obviously not going great,” Sheena Weatherly said.
“Growing pains, obviously,” Dylan Morin said. “I’m not really a Love guy to begin with. Wasn’t a fan of him when they drafted him three years ago.”
Weatherly and Morin both believe it’s time to consider moving in a different direction, but others think it’s too early to give up on the 24 year-old quarterback.
“Maybe not a Super Bowl champion first year,” Ryan Aldridge said. “But I think he can still be good.”
Aldridge said the blame shouldn’t be placed solely on Love. He wants Love to be given time to improve and develop a rapport with his young receivers.
“Just a little bit of practice is what he needs,” Aldridge said. “To know the Packers a little more and how the starting role works in Green Bay.”
By comparison, seven games into the 2008 season — Aaron Rodgers’ first as a starter — he had a touchdown to interception ratio of 12 to four. Love’s is currently 11 to eight.
“When Aaron took over from Brett, you could see that Aaron learned something,” Morin said. “Looking at this, doesn’t look like Jordan paid attention at all the last three years. You look at some of the passes he throws — not very good.”
Morin said it’s as simple as Love not passing the eye test. He’s suggesting the Packers’ look into the possibility of making a change to the first year quarterback out of Penn State.
“I would love to see Sean Clifford come in,” Weatherly said. “Maybe a little competition would light some fire under his feet.”
But even the most diehard fans say no matter who’s under center, they’ll still have love for Green Bay.
“We’re Packers fans,” Weatherly said. “We also want to be optimistic and we should support our quarterback.”
