GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A downtown Green Bay lot that has been vacant for years is now a hub for canine activity.
On Broadway Inc. held its grand opening and ribbon cutting for the Vital Essentials Dog Park at 325 N Broadway Wednesday.
The dog park includes fencing around the perimeter with a double gated entry, wind screens, seating, waste station, and water drinking area. Future obstacles and dog park enhancements will be installed in spring of 2024.
Brooke Hafs, director of resource development for On Broadway Inc., says the once empty lot now fulfils something the community needs.
“Prior to this dog park opening, there was only one other dog park in the entire city of Green Bay. So we thought, ‘what better way to activate an underutilized lot in the Broadway District by turning it into a dog park?’ because residential density is growing down here, there’s a lot of pet-friendly employers down here and we see pets moving throughout the district all the time and they need a place to exercise their dogs,” she said.
Hafs says it’s also gives pet owners some flexibility during On Broadway Inc. outdoor events.
“Events like the Farmers Market on Broadway, dogs are actually not allowed, per city law, so we wanted to create an alternative place for people to spend time on those evenings, you can bring your dog here, you can spend time here, maybe you can take turns coming down to the market; it saddens us that you can’t have a dog inside of our farmers market so we wanted to generate some options,” she said.
The dog park lot is owned by the city of Green Bay Redevelopment Authority. It is leasing the lot to On Broadway Inc. for the dog park. Should a developer want to build on the lot, On Broadway Inc. says the dog park will have to find a different location.
