SHAWANO, WI (WTAQ) — A Shawano high school student is facing repercussions after posting a video depicting hate speech on social media.
All WIAA members are required to have and uphold a code of conduct. This student was on the volleyball team, and her actions were in violation of the district’s code of conduct.
“We have within our policy different tiers of codes,” said Superintendent Kurt Krizan. “I can’t go into the specifics of it because that would be sharing a students behavior record, but I can tell you it was within tier 2, which has a 1-5 game suspension.”
The original post has since been taken down.
In a letter from the Superintendent sent to families last week, he says the district does not tolerate any hate speech, and encourages parents to have conversations with their kids.
The school district says it’s taking the issue very seriously.
Students are encouraged to use the online tool Speak Up Speak Out to report incidents anonymously.
