MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A woman and her mother were sentenced to five years on probation after a 3-week-old girl was hospitalized with severe dehydration and other medical woes.
Samantha Jordan, 25, and Kristine Jordan, 55, were each convicted of chronic neglect of a child, consequence is great bodily harm.
Samantha Jordan was also sentenced to an additional six months in jail, bringing her total with time served to nearly a year. Kristine Jordan has already served nearly a year in jail. The sentences matched the joint recommendations from the prosecutor and defense attorneys.
Assistant District Attorney Angelina Scarpelli said guardianship of the child is now with other relatives. While she did not have a recent update, it appears the child did not suffer any long-term medical damage from the neglect.
Neither Jordan addressed the court before sentence was issued.
At a previous court hearing, Assistant District Attorney Jordan Feest said the 3-week-old child — Samantha’s daughter — had suffered multiple organ failure, including kidney failure, severe dehydration, strokes, and seizures. Additionally, when taken to the hospital Jan. 12, 2022, the child still weighed about what it did at birth on Dec. 21, 2021.
According to the probable cause statement, the grandmother fed the child about 3 p.m. on a Tuesday. That night, another bottle was made about midnight. From 3 p.m. to 1 a.m. Wednesday, the child never woke. At about 5:30 a.m., Kristine Jordan noted the child had not eaten since the previous day. By noon, the child’s diaper was still dry, and had not eaten since the previous afternoon. They then took the child to the hospital about 3 p.m.
