APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — The Wisconsin Policy Forum has announced that the City of Appleton will receive a 2023 Salute to Local Government Award for its efforts to advance racial equity through its podcast, Appleton Engaged.
Appleton Engaged explores the vibrant people, organizations, and resources that make up the community and contribute to a well-rounded, diverse city.
“In this region, we are the only city that has gotten the [Effort to Advance] Racial Equity Award; and we’re competing against major cities like Madison and Milwaukee,” said Andy Anaam, Communications & Public Engagement Manager for the City of Appleton.
The podcast features guests from many different organizations, perspectives, and backgrounds and supports Appleton’s commitment to fostering a welcoming community for all.
In addition to educating the community about the available resources and interesting projects, the program also addresses themes related to diversity, inclusion, and the experiences of marginalized communities.
The podcast has become a platform for raising awareness and nurturing constructive conversations about an array of topics.
The podcast is hosted by Timber Smith, the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Coordinator, and Andy Anaam, the Communications & Public Engagement Manager.
“We do the least possible amount of editing so it’s completely raw, unfiltered, and honest,” said Anaam. “Timber and I both come from different racial backgrounds, so that’s another strength.”
The two hosts engage with guests, delving into narratives that discuss the challenges, inspirations, informational resources, and tangible efforts driving progress in the community.
The first podcast episode launched on June 4, 2023, and has episodes about the Building for Kids, Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce, Fox Valley Veterans Council, Northeast Wisconsin Chinese Association, NEW Hmong Professionals, Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce, and more.
The most listened to episode is Episode 8.
“When we were rolling our our communications for the reevaluation of the city, we decided to bring city assessor Matt Tooke on the podcast, so that he could talk, personalize, and humanize the approach of what is going on,” said Anaam.
