GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — BayCare Clinic is hosting their annual BRAs (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) of the Bay; an event to help raise awareness of the breast reconstruction rights of breast cancer survivors.
Federal law mandates coverage of breast reconstruction surgery for most breast cancer patients, even if reconstruction is delayed until after cancer treatment is completed.
The event is also a fundraiser for Ribbon of Hope.
“Ribbon of Hope is a local organization that was put together by a group of fierce local women, who realized you incur a lot of bills when you have breast cancer,” said Jessica Winkel; business development manager for BayCare. “So they set up a way for people to apply for grants to help with medical bills, transportation costs, costs related to getting a wig, even helping with their monthly bills, mortgage, or car payments.”
Winkel adds that 97 cents from every dollar donated to Ribbon of Hope goes back to breast cancer survivors within Brown, Oconto, and Kewaunee Counties. Breast cancer patients who live outside of those counties but receive care within those counties are also able to receive assistance from Ribbon of Hope.
Multiple area organizations and businesses are supporting the event through their bra decorating contest. The public is encouraged to view all submissions and vote for the best one here before October 11 at midnight.
This year there are 49 bras to vote on; which is the highest number of submissions in the history of the 9-year event.
Tickets for BRAs of the Bay are $20, and can be purchased here. The event is on Thursday, October 12 at 6 p.m. at The Resch Expo.
BRAs of the Bay will feature the West De Pere High School Jazz Band, appetizers and signature cocktails, raffles, and speeches from breast reconstruction surgeons and their patients. A DJ is scheduled for 9 p.m. Breast cancer survivors will also get a free gift.
