The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff put up another goose egg Thursday afternoon, shutting out the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 to take the rubber game of the series at American Family Field. Corbin Burnes worked the first four innings, giving up 5 hits and striking out four, pushing him over 200 K’s on the season again. Manager Craig Counsell didn’t want Burns to go too deep with the playoffs right around the corner and brought on Julio Teheran who gave Milwaukee four more scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out 4. Former number one pick Ethan Small came on for the ninth and while he walked a pair, finished the job to earn his first big league save. Christian Yelich had a solid day at the plate, going two for three with an RBI showing no ill effects from a sore back that had him sidelined for over a week. William Contreras drove in another run as the Brewers hit the 90 win mark against 69 losses. Just three games are left in the regular season and Milwaukee will welcome the Chicago Cubs to town for the final series. The Cubs lost again as the Atlanta Braves completed a sweep with a 5-3 victory Thursday. Chicago is 82-77 and for now, on the outside looking in for the final NL Wild Card spot, a half game behind the Miami Marlins. The Brewers will host the third place Wild Card team in the opening best of three series at home next week. Colin Rea will start the series opener against the Cubs Friday night, opposing Kyle Hendricks. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:35 PM with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
