It happened around 10:44 a.m. Tuesday on Washington Street at the intersection with U.S. Highway 16A in Custer, South Dakota.
Officials say a Subaru Outback, driven by a 78-year-old woman from Hot Springs, South Dakota, was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection when the moped was traveling toward the intersection.
The SUV then pulled out in front of the moped and the moped struck the front driver’s side of the SUV.
The driver of the moped, Michael Congrove, 67, of Neenah, and the passenger of the moped, Donna Champeau, 74, of Appleton, became separated from the vehicle.
They were pronounced deceased at the scene. Congrove was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.
The driver and the passenger of the SUV were not hurt.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol continues to investigate the crash.
