WEST BEND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The suspect in an alleged Winneconne road rage shooting is believed to have died in a crash following a short pursuit with West Bend police.
The West Bend Police Department says just after 5 p.m. Wednesday, they received a request from Winnebago County to check an address in West Bend for a male suspect wanted in connection with a shooting.
When officers located the suspect’s vehicle and attempted to make contact with him, the suspect drove off and a pursuit ensued.
A short time later, police say the suspect crashed on U.S. Highway 45, just north of the Park Avenue overpass. The male suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No one was else was hurt in the crash.
At this time, while it is believed they are the same person, Chief Sauriol says authorities are working to confirm if the man who died in the West Bend crash is in fact the man suspected of shooting another person several times at Lake Winneconne Park following an alleged road rage incident.
Chief Sauriol expects that to be confirmed later Thursday.
Winneconne Police have said they don’t know the relationship between the shooter and victim, or if road rage was in fact the cause.
After the victim was shot, he drove himself several blocks from the park to Marsh Family Dentistry. Staff there rendered aid to the victim until first responders arrived.
Police say the victim’s condition is unknown but he was conscious and talking when he went to the hospital.
