BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) – Officials are warning Brown County residents not to fall for an “elaborate scam” involving payment for alleged missed jury service.
The Brown County Clerk of Court’s Office says that imposters are posing as law enforcement officers as part of this scheme, calling residents and saying that records indicate they failed to report for jury duty.
The scammers say that as a result, the person must now either turn themselves in to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office for arrest, or mail payment for the missed service in the form of cash or prepaid gift cards.
John A. Vander Leest, Brown County clerk of courts said, “There is no situation where it would be necessary for jurors to send cash or gift cards for missing jury service” and calls it’s “100% a scam.”
If you have been impacted by this scam, you are asked to call your local police department.
