GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Brown County Heroin Treatment Court graduated another class on Friday with a ceremony held at the Brown County Courthouse.
This initiative was created in 2015 as a response to the opioid epidemic. It was the first of its kind in the country, as a program specifically addressing opioid abuse.
The court’s target population is high-risk individuals with addiction and/or mental health issues in Brown County. Participants receive comprehensive treatment and supervision services to assist them in their path toward sobriety.
“I used to be in community organizing and doing a lot of great things for the community,” said Nicole LaForge, a graduate of the treatment court. “To fall on my face and hit rock bottom, and then to come back and see the community come through for me, support me, and get me here I’m very emotional.”
Brown County Treatment Court graduates have a 38% rate of reoffending within the first three years, far lower than the average rate for drug offenders at 68%.
