City of Manitowoc
MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ) — The City of Manitowoc and Wisconsin Maritime Museum are holding an event to celebrate Manitowoc’s designation as an American WWII Heritage City by the National Park Service; a designation given to only one city per state.
The celebration is Thursday, August 17 at 1 p.m. on the roof deck of the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. The city received the designation on December 5, 2022.
Most notably, Manitowoc is known for its production of twenty-eight submarines, which were ordered by the United States Navy for use in the Second World War.
Additionally, companies such as Burger Boat, Aluminum Specialty Company, Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company, Heresite Protective Coatings, and more produced thousands of items used for the war effort. Representatives from each of these businesses will be present at the event, as will other local leaders, legislators, and historians.
Courtney Hansen, Director of Tourism for the City of Manitowoc, says it wasn’t just the businesses and manufacturing that contributed to the war effort, but the people did, too.
“We had a show at the Capitol Civic Centre, then called the Capitol Theatre, were we obtained over $1 million in war bond sales in just one night,” said Hansen. “We were second only to Milwaukee.”
The celebration on Thursday will also feature a whistle solute from USS Cobia. Click here to learn more.
