While we’re a long way from end of season magic numbers, the Milwaukee Brewers magic number last night in Washington was 4. The Crew put up four runs in the fourth inning to snap a four game slide as they beat the Nationals 6-4. Andruw Monasterio got the Brewers on the board with an RBI single in the top of the second but Washington answered with a three spot against starter Freddy Peralta in the bottom half. C.J. Abrams had a key, two run single. Milwaukee then put together it’s rally capped by two out, two run singles from Brice Turang and Joey Wiemer for a 5-3 lead. Peralta got through six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts. William Contreras made it 6-3 with an RBI double in the 7th. Young Abner Uribe worked the bottom of the seventh allowing a run on one hit but Devin Williams closed it out for his 27th save of the year. Mark Canha, acquired from the Mets on Monday, joined the club and started as the designated hitter going 0 for 3 with a walk and a run scored in his Brewers debut. The Brewers improved to 58-50 and gained ground in the division race as the Cubs routed the Red 20-9, bringing Milwaukee back to within a half game of the NL Central lead. Wade Miley will face MacKenzie Gore in the series and road trip finale, pre-game coverage begins at 11:30 AM with a 12:05 PM first pitch on WNFL.
The Major League trade deadline was Tuesday afternoon and the Brewers made two more deals, one right before the deadline, sending Luis Urias to the Boston Red Sox in exchange for pitching prospect Bradley Blalock who is 6-1 with a 2.19 ERA for Boston’s single A team. Earlier in the day Milwaukee swapped relief pitchers with the Arizona Diamondbacks, sending Peter Strzelecki to Arizona for veteran Andrew Chafin who is 2-3 with a 4.19 ERA this season.
