It’s only July but there’s meaningful baseball at American Family Field. The Milwaukee Brewers welcomed the Cincinnati Reds, winners of five straight, looking to take back the lead in the National League Central Division race but the Brewers said not on this night. Christian Yelich came through with a ground ball single to right field that scored Blake Perkins with the walk-off run in the bottom of the ninth in Milwaukee’s 3-2 victory. This game had big moments right from the start when Elly de la Cruz took starter Colin Rea deep to lead off the contest but Joey Wiemer backed up to the center field wall and pulled the would be homer back in the park. William Contreras then brought Yelich home with an RBI single in the bottom of the first for a 1-0 lead. The Brewers had plenty of chances to add on, drawing 8 walks but between the Contreras hit and Yelich’s game winner, Milwaukee went 0 for 15 with runners in scoring position. de la Cruz meanwhile got even in a big way in the third, blasting a 456 foot home run to right with a man aboard for a 2-1 Cincinnati lead. It was the longest homer hit this year at American Family Field. Rookie Sal Frelick continued his whirlwind start to his big league career by golfing a pitch over the right field wall in the 6th for his first major league home run that tied the game at 2. Frelick has five hits with a homer in his first three big league games, a feat last accomplished from a rookie by one Paul Molitor. The bullpen kept the Reds in check with Devin Williams striking out a pair in the 9th to earn the win and set the stage for the Yelich heroics. The Brewers are now 56-45 and lead Cincinnati by a game and a half. Corbin Burnes, off two outstanding scoreless outings, will face Andrew Abbott who pitched 8 shutout innings allowing just one hit in his last start in game two Tuesday night. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:35 PM with a 7:10 PM first pitch on WTAQ.
