GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Green Bay Police Department continues their conversations on preparing for the 2025 NFL draft.
The department has been communicating with the Kansas City police department about how they handled the 2023 draft. Chief Chris Davis shared some of their main discussion topics.
“Movement of people in and out of the event, the traffic plans, and things to think about in terms of dignitaries that might show up and how that impacts the security plan,” said Chief Davis.
Additionally, the department will likely utilize officers on bikes during the draft.
Chief Davis says the department has been wanting to utilize bikes for a while now, and events like the draft are a great time to use them.
On Tuesday, the Green Bay Common Council approved the purchase of 27 bicycles for the mobile response team.
Before the bikes can be used, officers will need to be trained. Part of the training includes learning to ride a bike at the same speed that people are walking.
Not only will the bikes be beneficial in getting the officers around…
“If for some reason you’re trying to block off an area, you can use bikes very effectively to almost make a fence,” said Chief Davis. “It’s a really low key, non-threatening way to guide a crowd.”
The Green Bay Police Department is still working on selecting an incident commander for the draft; the selection should occur around or before this fall. The Kansas City Police Department and Green Bay Police Department will re-connect again once the selection is made.
