Professional women’s golf returns to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula this weekend with the 12th annual Island Resort Championship at the Sweetgrass Golf Club in Harris, Michigan. The tournament is part of the Epson Tour, featuring up and coming players hoping to earn cards to the LPGA circuit. The top 10 finishers on the Epson Tour at the end of the year qualify for the LPGA in 2024. The tournament has a total purse of $225,000.00 with the winner earning $33,750.00. The field of 156 will compete over three days and play 54 holes at Sweetgrass which plays to a par of 72 over 6200 yards.
Among the players in the field is Tess Hackworthy, the University of Wisconsin graduate who has a sponsor exemption. She missed the cut by a stroke at Sweetgrass a year ago but is riding to the U.P. with momentum after beating her best friend and PGA Champions Tour star Steve Stricker’s daughter Bobbi in a playoff last week to win her 5th Wisconsin Women’s Open title at the Blackhawk Country Club in Madison.
Six winners on this year’s Epson Tour are looking for a second title including Miranda Wang, Gigi Stoll, Savannah Vilaubi, Jenny Coleman, Jiwon Jeon and Alena Sharp.
The Island Resort is located two hours north of Green Bay on U.S. 41. Tickets for the entire weekend are just $10.00.
