GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Even with the rain, area authorities pedaled on to make a difference.
The Green Bay Police Department along with the Brown County Sheriff Office and other surrounding agencies partnered up for the Green Bay Area Torch Run to benefit the Special Olympics of Wisconsin Tuesday.
Participating law enforcement officers began their bike ride on the Fox River Trail in Green Bay and ended at Voyageur Park in De Pere.
The bike ride raises awareness and money for Special Olympics athletes.
Lt. of Community Police at the Green Bay Police Department, Steve Mahoney, says it’s among the department’s biggest fundraisers and no matter what type of weather, it brings joy to all involved.
“When they see us, they look at us like we’re heroes and I look at them and I think the same of them that they are just so happy to hang out with us and it actually probably benefits us more to be able to interact and to hang out with them and just have a good time with them,” Mahoney said.
Mahoney says the event also helps build a friendly relationship between the athletes and officers so if they need help, and they see an officer out in the community in full uniform, they won’t be intimidated or feel like they can’t talk to them.
Law enforcement agencies across the state held similar torch runs for Special Olympics of Wisconsin.
Organizers say the goal was to raise $10,000 across Wisconsin.
