OCONTO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Over 40 years after a human skull was found in a Lena landfill, officials are correcting some of the only identifying information that has been discovered in the unsolved cold case.
The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office posted on Facebook Monday about the skull, which was found inside a metal bread box in August of 1979.
At the time, forensic anthropologists said the skull belonged to a 30- to 40-year-old woman who had died in recent years.
But with 2023’s advanced forensic DNA testing and genetic genealogy, officials are saying the skull actually belonged to a male. No other identifying characteristics have been figured out, though.
The Oconto County Sheriff’s Office is fundraising to support efforts to identify the person.
