GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Eric Genrich has won a second term as Green Bay mayor.
He defeated challenger Chad Weininger 53%-47%.
The mayor claiming victory on what he called the bread and butter issues — making investments in infrastructure, in public safety, and in community and economic development all across the city. He told supporters, “Doing some great stuff to fight flooding, to fight climate change. And last but not least, we really leaned into democracy.”
The mayor also touting a new way of looking at politics in Green Bay, by creating things like the equal rights commission, tripling the city’s municipal equality index score and adding a resiliency coordinator position.
Heading into his second term, the mayor wants to continue to build on what he accomplished in his first term while adding focus to other issues like making affordable housing available to more people in the city.
“I think we’re on really on a positive trajectory. We’ve done some really good things with our common council, but leaning into our need for housing for people of all income levels and so we’re going to be doing a lot of work on that front as well as just economic development generally”
The race broke records for spending.
More than $1 million was spent on the race — with the majority of those funds coming from outside groups and not the candidates themselves.
Political action committees on both sides of the aisle have invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in this race, with much of that money going to TV ads.
