TOWN OF STEPHENSON (WTAQ-WLUK) — Officials say a five-year-old girl who died in a Marinette County crash was not restrained.
The crash happened just after 4 p.m. Thursday on County Highway X near Newton Lake Road in the town of Stephenson.
The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office says a vehicle, driven by a 48-year-old Crivitz man, was going north on Newton Lake Road and had stopped for the stop sign at County Highway X.
As the Crivitz man proceeded through the intersection, he collided with a vehicle driving east on County Highway X.
The crash caused the eastbound vehicle, driven by a 29-year-old Crivitz man, to overturn on its side, partially ejecting the rear-seat passenger, five-year-old Stella Kempke of Crivitz.
Stella was pronounced dead at the scene.
Failure to yield from a stop sign and lack of use of a restraint appear to be factors in the crash that remains under investigation, the sheriff’s office says.
